About Keener Communications

Jim Keener - Keener Communications

Keener Communications LLC was founded in 2008 by Jim Keener, a public relations, writing, editing and publishing expert based in Boulder, Colorado. The company offers affordable and efficient PR and communications services and seeks to provide strategic and tactical support for companies that don’t want to make the financial commitment needed to develop an in-house PR function or to hire a full-service, external agency.

Jim takes great pride in his insatiable desire to learn and understand his clients’ business and customer needs with an eye toward creating, managing or maintaining a robust communications function specifically tailored for them. Taking this approach, Jim only takes on a few accounts at a time in order to give each client the attention they deserve.

Work history
Jim has more than a decade of diverse communications and public relations experience in corporate, agency and start-up environments.

Prior to starting Keener Communications, Jim was an account executive at high-tech public and investor relations firm, Catapult PR-IR, where he assisted in driving PR strategies on behalf of the firm’s technology clients. Duties included media relations, project management and overall client communication initiatives.

Before Catapult, Jim was communications manager and company spokesman for Platts, the global energy information division of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP) where he worked with nearly every major national and international print, broadcast, radio and Web-based news outlet for the company’s global energy market experts and data.

He was also a marketing and PR manager for Financial Times Energy preceding that company’s acquisition by McGraw-Hill. He began his career at Roberts Rinehart Publishers where he worked in the editorial and production departments before becoming company publicist responsible for author relations, book tours and securing book reviews.

Jim received a BA in English from the University of Colorado, completed graduate-level coursework in publishing from the University of Denver’s Publishing Institute and received a certificate in renewable energy (RETool program) from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado. He and his wife Kathy live in Boulder with their two young sons.
